WHITNEY PLANTATION BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION
WALLACE, LOUISIANA, February 7 - Black History Month in February is an opportunity for us all to recognize, honor, and celebrate the many ways in which our Black, African, and African American neighbors and communities contribute to the vibrancy and cultural depth of our nation.
In commemoration of Black History Month 2024, Whitney Plantation in Wallace, LA, will welcome back the congregation who occupied the church that is now a part of Whitney Plantation, the First Community Antioch Baptist Church, on Saturday, February 17, 2024, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The "Mind, Body, and Soul" celebration will include performances by the First Community Antioch Baptist Church choir and liturgical dance team. A conversation between Interracial Communication Scholar and Author, Dr. Tina M. Harris, Dr. Nyoki Cosey-Brown, and Candice Sorapuru, of Innovative Counseling Solutions, LLC., will take place at noon. Other speakers include Dr. Steven Beckham, Pastor of First Community Antioch Baptist Church, and Mrs. Helen McGee, the oldest living member of the congregation. Whitney Plantation will present the "Heritage Guardian Award" to a distinguished community leader who has been a relentless advocate for justice and has fought for River Parish residents' rights while showing an unwavering commitment to the community.
The Louisiana Department of Health will be on-site to provide COVID-19 and Flu vaccinations, and the All of Us Research Program will be present to provide information about how they are working to improve health through research. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from the Dat Dem's Food Truck.
The celebration is free with the purchase of a guided or self-guided tour. Self-guided tours are free for St. John the Baptist and St. James Parishes residents.
